Spotted Bamboo 5 litre plants 3ft tall ■☻җ җ

A rare specimen bamboo from China, clump forming with unusual purple brown markings on the culms and mature branches. Height in the region of 3-8m with long leaves and the new culm sheaths also have an attractive purple brown mottling. Like most Phyllostachys it can send out runners especially if short of water.

Bamboos are a must for tropical bedding and I am currently searching for seed sources to offer as part of JungleSeeds, however many of these plants only flower once every 70 years and almost die in the process! In the interim most Bamboos are propagated by division which is a slow undertaking. Therefore many new and uncommon varieties are expensive to purchase. Nigra develops black stems given a sunny position but it will achieve 15ft to 20ft given a few years to develop. It is a controllable clump forming variety that does not throw out invasive runners.

A big Bamboo reaching a height of 10 meters and culms with a diameter of up to 5 cm. Very hardy down to -35°C and the culms are vertically ribbed. 'Aureocaulis' is distinguished from the species form by its bright yellow classic "bamboo canes" rather than green culms. Although it spreads less vigorously than ordinary Vivax it is just as hardy and therefore more suitable if space is limited. Alternatively use a root barrier around the plant to contain it.

Arrow Bamboo 4 litre plants 3ft tall ■☻җ җ җ
This bamboo is one of the most widespread bamboos in the country. It makes an excellent screen or tub plant and I have been growing it for more than 20 years without any invasive problems. The leaves, 5 to 13 inches long by 1.75 inches wide, are much larger than the leaves of other hardy bamboos of similar height. The culm sheaths are persistent. It is also one of the best bamboos for a windy or seaside planting. Hardy to -25°C topping out at about 8ft but normally 6ft to 7ft.
