Red-Hot Cat Tail 1 litre plant
This is a very attractive tropical shrub with its bright green toothed leaves toothed and long, hairy tail like crimson drooping red flower clusters. Capable of reaching a height of 2 meters careful pinching and pruning may be necessary to keep Acalypha Hispida from becoming too tall and untidy. The red flowers can reach up to 10-50cm long. It requires bright light, well drained soil and warm conditions. Dead flowers should be removed and watering should be minimal in winter and spider mite can be a problem without control.

Allamanda cathartica

Queen’s Tears 1 litre plant җ
Billbergia nutans makes a good conservatory plant and is also happy as a houseplant where it can live on a windowsill for years. It is often listed in magazines as one of the top ten houseplants that can tolerate almost total neglect. It is a bromeliad, related to the pineapple requiring a well drained, gritty soil. Water only when really necessary and feed only occasionally. Grown in full sun, the foliage loses some of its lustre but produces copious amounts of exotic pink flower spikes. I have had customers tell me that they will survive quite well outside given a sheltered micro climate,

Carica Papaya Babaco

JP2222
!

3 litre plants 3ft tall
Rare cool tolerant Mountain Papaya - Grow your own Papaya Fruits on a dwarf 6ft tree!

This mountain Papaya comes from the highlands of Ecuador and thrives in a cool subtropical climate, free of frost. The babaco is much more tolerant of cool, damp winters than the papaya. It will withstand temperatures to about 28° F in very short bursts, although it may lose most of its leaves. The babaco is ideally suited to container culture and also excellent for greenhouses in a sunny spot.

Growing to about 6 feet in height it does not branch and during the cold winter months the leaves degenerate and are usually shed. As these plants are vegetatively propagated they only produce self fertile female flowers. The excellent seedless fruits, to 12" long ripen in the late autumn to winter depending on the season. The flesh of the babaco is very juicy, slightly acidic and low in sugar with a unique flavour that has been described as having overtones of strawberry, pineapple and papaya. New growth from the base should be only encouraged when the old stem has become too old to be productive.

Lady of the Night 1 litre plants
This plant has one of the strongest fragrances around in the evening, when the scent becomes almost intoxicating. The masses of small, creamy blooms open up at night releasing their perfume, but some scent still lingers during the day from the semi closed flowers. They bloom on and off during the warmer months of the year and grow quickly so regular pruning will be needed to keep it contained. An extremely popular plant always in high demand.

Clerodendrum quadriloculare

Shooting Star 1 litre plant
I have been after this tropical Clerodendrum for a few years now, it has striking large blooms in early spring that explode into a star burst of pink/white colour. The green leaves have a burgundy underside for added attraction. A large plant in its native Philippines to 10ft, but can be kept to size and shape by pruning or made into an attractive standard pot shrub. We have managed to acquire a quantity of micro propagated plants for sale in 2007.

Clerodendrum ugandense

Butterfly Bush 1 litre plant

The blue butterfly bush is a tough open growing African evergreen shrub to 10ft tall, but is easily kept much smaller. The inflorescences, borne at the ends of long arching branches, are panicles 4-10in long composed of individual 1” blue violet flowers more or less continuously throughout the summer and autumn.

Coffea arabica

Coffee Bean Trees 1 litre plants
Such a well known commodity! But did you know that the plants make interesting house or conservatory shrubs with dark, glossy green leaves, small white scented flower clusters followed by bright red coffee beans. Don’t get too excited though about grinding your own coffee from the seed - unless it is dried and cured correctly, it tastes awful!

Cyperus papyrus

Egyptian Papyrus 1 litre pots 2ft tall
Both seed and plant demands for Papyrus from JS&G are high. Attractive 6ft plus reeds with 18” delicate flower heads, drifting in the breeze. Requires protection from the wind planted out or the reeds will bend and break.

Pink Ball Shrub large 5 litre plants

Dombeya is a spectacularly large shrub with large heart-shaped leaves and dense heads of little pink flowers which hang from foot long stems. The plant is native to Madagascar, but widely grown as a large garden shrub in Florida. Not at all frost hardy but ok for a cool conservatory. Can be pruned after flowering in mid summer to keep to a sensible size but best in a large conservatory where it will create a dramatic impression.

Epiphyllum Oxypetalum

JP795
!
Larger picture
Queen of the Night 1 litre plants
An easily cultivated, fast growing epiphyte. Needs compost containing plenty of humus and sufficient moisture in summer. Should not be kept under 10ºC (50ºF) in winter. Can be grown in semi-shade but not full sun, extra light in the early spring will stimulate budding. Flowers in late spring or early summer and large specimens can produce several crops of flowers in a season. The blooms are stunning 12" wide strongly fragrant and pure white. Each bud only opens for one night though and usually after 7pm, and it is really frustrating if you miss it! This epiphyllum like plant can reach tree like proportions sending out 4ft glossy green shoots that are tougher than they look. Why we do not sell it is that slugs simply love the new growth and I gave up trying to produce "clean" plants, but if you do not mind the odd nibbled leaf we are happy to supply this rare and fabulous plant.

One look at the fringed hibiscus, and it’s easy to see why the shrub is so popular across the world. It’s unique weeping flowers set it apart from other hibiscus varieties. The gorgeous pink and red pendent flowers make it very popular as a pot plant.
