Gingers (Delivery May to Sep 2008)
Tropical Gingers from JungleGardens, are another favourite of mine which I have been growing for about 30 years and in particular the Hedychiums. The strong rhizomatic root systems throw annual shoots to 6 ft topped by a dense head of flowers in late summer which look and smell gorgeous. They are hardier than most people realise and given a warm south facing wall with a protective mulch in winter, they will survive reasonable frosts. However because of our short growing season they may not reach flowering maturity outside, unless in a hot sun pocket. The alternative is to dig them up and place into large pots for late flowering and over wintering under glass in a frost free greenhouse or conservatory and started into growth in early spring.
