Tropical Climbers

For Summer Effect (Delivery May to Oct 2007)

Nothing is quite like a stunning tropical climber or tropical vine amongst summer bedding or growing up a warm house wall. They always bring happy memories of holidays in the Caribbean and their sheer exuberance and rampant growth can be surprising even in our luke warm summers. Not many are really hardy, although Passiflora Caerulea is root hardy and the vine stems can stand up to -10˚C given a protected wall. Similarly Campsis Radicans can just about tolerate -10˚C given similar protection. Another alternative is to grow fast growing perennial tropical climbers as annuals, and if sown early can become quite a show piece. If you are lucky enough to have a heated conservatory or greenhouse the range of tropical climbers you can try growing is simply stunning.

Herald's Trumpet 1 litre plants
This is a fast growing long leaved heavy woody vine to 20 ft. with huge 6" fragrant white trumpet flowers. The leaves are lush and tropical looking. An established vine may take a light frost but not much more. You will need plenty of space and a large conservatory for this lovely scrambling climber that needs a hot position and full sun.

"Paper Flower" Magenta Purple variety 2 Litre Plant 12" to 18" tall
Another classic climber from the Mediterranean and other warmer climates. In the past I have grown these with minimum success as they become too rampant with few flowers. However some of the more recent varieties seem quite floriferous and I intend to grow one in particular up our house wall next summer. They flower continuously given a constant temperature above 15C.

Bleeding Heart Vine Established 1 litre plants 2ft tall
An unusual conservatory shrubby climber that you do not see very often. If pruned correctly it will erupt into sprays of pure white flowers, with scarlet crimson centres that last for weeks and weeks.

Perennial Morning Glory 1 litre pots
A strong growing vine more robust than the normal morning glory with large blue flowers that fade to pink as they age and large three lobed leaves. Propagated by cuttings and over wintered in a heated greenhouse keeping the plant on the dry side. Beware this plant is rampant!

Pink Mandevilla -1 litre pots
This very floriferous hybrid is one of the showiest of all pink flowered vines, with clusters of 3”-4” bright rose pink trumpets with dark pink throats in summer and autumn. Handsome leathery dark green leaves, twining stems. A popular vine that likes heat and does well in containers.

Hybrid X Passion Flower 1 litre plants
I acquired this passion flower in Portugal many years ago trailing over a tree in a friends garden. It appears to be a cross of Antioquensis, with almost identical flower colour and size, but with shorter flower stems allowing a more horizontal flower display. The plant is also more robust, cool temperature tolerant, with larger deep green leaves. Alas it’s perfection is marred by a late flowering autumn habit.

Hardy White Passion Flower 1 litre pots җ
A nearly hardy Passion flower that I have over wintered outdoors down to -5C. If you have a warmer micro climate it is worth a try on a protected warm wall. Flowers similar in shape and size to the normal blue caerulea but pure white and not quite so frost tolerant as its brother.

Hardy Purple Passion Flower 1 litre pots җ
This lovely purple variety is a hybrid between two hardy passion flower species, and as a result, is very hardy itself, surviving temperatures below freezing for short periods. Vines will die back if temperatures drop below 0°C but can regrow from roots when the weather warms up again. Grow in full sun or part shade, keep watered throughout the growing season. Flowers begin in spring and the vine will flower on and off for most of the spring and summer.

Purple Granadilla 1 litre plants
My all time favourite passion flower with large leaves and huge purple flowers with a very heavy scent that just has to be appreciated with your own nose. I have never managed to get any of my plants to set fruit (the giant granadilla which is said to be delicious) but who cares, the flowers are magnificent. Really only suitable for the conservatory but beware, when looked after it will become very rampant! We also have some Passiflora Alata plants for sale - similar flower (please enquire)

Scarlet Passion Flower 1 litre plants
Fantastic brilliant red flowers on a climber with vine shaped leaves. It will need heat and plenty of room to flower plus some patience it is also slower growing than some passion flowers making it more manageable under glass. But the flowers are absolutely stunning. Picture is from one of our own raised seedlings.

Sandpaper Vine - 1 litre plants
An interesting vine from Mexico both for its leaves as well as the flowers. It is sometimes called Sandpaper Vine because of the Sandpaper textured leaves or the Purple Wreath, or Blue Bird Vine. It is hardy down to 5°C but not much colder. It will take heavy drought and blooms in the late summer with long lasting foot long tresses of purple flowers. Needs acid conditions to do well. Good conservatory semi climber or lax shrub.

Snail Vine 1 litre plants
From South America this rampant but controllable and quite rare vine carries attractive blue sweet pea type flowers, excellent for conservatory or patio. The name of snail vine comes from the curious flower buds that resemble a slug or snail before opening. After growing this plant for a number of years it does seem to be prone to spider mite that is controllable with Dynamec. It has also proved a tough resilient plant easily brought through any winter in a frost free area.
